KENDAL COLLEGE
Client: English Heritage
Reinstating of the network of tunnels that run underneath the gardens of Shibden Hall. Building of a spine wall that run externally and internally of Shibden Hall visitor centre.
Kendal College is a further education college situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park.
Heritage Masonry were employed by Banner Construction as the sole masonry contractors to undertake the work on the technology centre and the IT Centre. The technology centre comprised of a back bedded stone wall and landscaped area to include steps, planters and a flagged area.
The structure had to have the appearance of a dry stone wall, to achieve this look the stone was back bedded with mortar leaving the front quarter stone bare which created the desired effect.
The rear of the technology centre required a retaining wall to be constructed using gabion baskets which were walled internally with limestone.
The steps to the front of the technology centre were built by forming the steps with concrete then cladding with limestone slips to the treads and risers. Adjacent to the steps were large planters which were capped with granite copings, imported from Asia then cut to size on site.
Due to our client not having as much profit in the project as first anticipated, we worked closely with them to offer advice and cost savings which enabled us to bring the project within their budget.
